How does cryotherapy work?

Whole body cryotherapy consists of exposing the body to the low temperature of -150°C for 2.5 - 3.5 minutes using nitrogen gas. The cold penetrates half a millimetre into the skin, interacting with the temperature sensors all at once to cause a full body response. The body draws blood from the outer tissues into the core where's it's cleaned of toxins while adding rich nutrients and oxygen. Endorphins are also released which help to decrease anxiety and depression. After the session the clean, oxygenated, and nutrient enriched blood returns to the entire body bringing with is a multitude of health benefits.

What are the health benefits?

Benefits can include increased vitality, decreased inflammation, pain relief, decreased muscle soreness, arthritic pain relief, accelerated post-workout recovery, improved immune system, reduced stress, improved skin health, migraine relief, increased hair density, stronger nails, depression and anxiety relief, decreased signs of cellulite, improved sleep patterns, and increased athletic performance. Studies have also shown that the body can burn up to 800 calories post treatment which can assist in weight loss.

Where is the origin of cryotherapy?

The benefits of cold treatments have been known as far back as 2500 BC with the early Egyptians. It was Dr. Toshiro Yamauchi, a Japanese scientist, who developed whole body cryotherapy to help treat rheumatoid arthritis in 1978. With these cryo-procedures, Dr. Yamaguchi found he could significantly reduce the soreness and pain his patients usually felt during regular movement. During 1984 in Germany, this research was taken further and perfected by Professor Reinhard Fricke into what we use today. Although this technology has just recently been introduced into North America, whole body cryotherapy can be found in over 70 hospitals in Central and Eastern Europe, with wider acceptance spreading throughout the world.

What is whole body cryotherapy?

The term cryotherapy comes from the Greek ‘cryo’ meaning cold and ‘therapeia’ meaning cure. Whole body cryotherapy can be applied using either a chamber or a sauna, and consists of exposing the body to very cold temperatures over the course of 2.5 – 3.5 minutes. The chamber method consists of a full room or series of rooms which are cooled similar to a fridge. The cold temperatures within a cryosauna are achieved by using nitrogen gas. The cold gas fills the cryosauna up to the lower neck, while the head remains in open air. The cold is not a piercing cold, and there is no after care required following a treatment.

The cold never felt so good!

Who cannot use cryotherapy?

There are a few restrictions to consider:

  • Your head must be exposed during treatment therefore minimum
    height requirements apply (4'9" Minimum)
  • People with blood pressure higher than 180/100
  • Recent heart attack or stroke (3 months)
  • Allergic reaction to extreme cold (rare)
  • Pregnancy
  • Unstable chest pains
  • Uncontrolled epileptic seizure
  • Severe dementia
  • Cardiac pacemaker
  • Open wounds
  • Fever
  • Acute kidney or urinary tract diseases
  • Venous thrombosis (blood clots)
  • Arrhythmia
  • Acute or recent myocardial infarction.
  • ("KAEKT-01 "KRION")  weight limit as *350lbs

Is nitrogen gas harmful?

Nitrogen gas is not harmful, in fact 78% of the air we breathe is made up of nitrogen. During treatment your head remains outside of the cryo sauna and in the open air.

“The temperature level in whole body cryotherapy is brisk but very tolerable” – Dr. Alan Christianson

What do I wear?

The more skin exposed the better. You are required to wear under garments or a bathing suit. We provide socks, slippers and gloves to protect the extremities from over exposure. We require any metal and jewelery to be removed before each session.

How many treatments are required?

This largely depends on what you are looking to achieve, or the severity of your condition. Many clients notice increased vitality, improved sleep, or decreased muscle soreness after their first treatment. The more immediate benefits last for 4-6 hours following treatment. If you are experiencing chronic pain or are looking to achieve more of the long term benefits, we suggest 6-10 sessions in *close succession (every 1-2 days) for 2-3 weeks tapering off to a couple times per week, then once per week as your pain improves. Many athletes use cryotherapy to expedite their recovery time and increase their performance level during their regular workouts, or while preparing for competitions.

Devin Gibson

I have been a resident of Kelowna my entire life, and have always had a passion for helping others. It has been my dream to be a part of something which brings me great pride and joy. Cryo Care allows me to help people on a personal level each day, facilitating and measuring positive changes in their lives. I get to see people experience freedom from their plaguing pains, and I see their faces brighten when they feel the difference Whole Body Cryotherapy has made in their lives. I can also partner with local charities to help with larger fund raising efforts and feel good knowing we are able to make a difference on so many levels. I co-founded Cryo Care with the intention of helping as many people as possible, and that's exactly what we do.

Taylor Saukarookoff

I am born and raised in Kelowna, where my family has been living in the community for three generations. My grandparents had a productive farm in the Rutland area, and I was fortunate to take part in it's final harvest. This was a great experience which allowed me to help my family and participate in my heritage. In kindergarten my teacher asked the class “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I wanted to be a Police Officer. To me, the police were people who helped others and that as my ultimate goal. With the entrepreneurship in my blood coming from my family history, along with my passion to help others, I co-founded Cryo Care. I am proud to be able to help as many people as I can using Whole Body Cryotherapy, while remaining close to my family roots in Kelowna.

I must admit that I was a tad apprehensive at first but it's really nothing to be apprehensive about after the 1st treatment. I have been in for about 7 treatments altogether now and plan to continue with them.  I have osteo-arthritis in my knees and it has gotten to the point where I would have to get down on my hands and knees in order to stand from a squatting position (if I was even able to get to the squat without falling over). I've noticed a HUGE improvement in my ability to stand from squatting (no longer have to get on all 4's and can stand back up unaided like I used to). And, yes, I can now get to the squat without falling over as well.  I also had a shoulder injury and was on pain meds and muscle relaxants to help reduce the tenderness before physio.. After 2 treatments I no longer felt any pain and had full movement in my shoulder/neck. Without the Cryo Therapy I probably would have been sent to physio after 2 weeks of the meds but instead the injury only lasted 1 1/2 weeks in total. You bet I was impressed!  As a side-effect of the treatments, I also find that I have much more energy afterwards and sleep much better at night (and I'm burning calories to top it off!) I would highly recommend giving this "new to Kelowna" facility a try.

I was hesitant to try this but my sister is big supporter so I gave it a try. I suffer from arthritis and after one session had no pain. I slept the best in a long time pain free. Not only did I become a fan I had two more sessions this week. Highly recommend it. Devin and Taylor are very professional. A great experience. See you next time I am in town!

I have been to two Cryo sessions so far and I can't say enough good things about it. Day after treatment #2 and it is amazing how much things have improved. Devin and his crew are awesome! If you have muscle pain or joint soreness you have to try Cryo Care!

Cryo care has been very beneficial. I have had knee pain in association with an autoimmune disease for 18 months. After a friend suggested we try cryo care..(I admit I was a little unsure about it.) It was amazing!!I felt energized. After 6 treatments the swelling in my knee is considerably decreased and I am enjoying way more mobility. Give it a try!

The whole experience was pleasant and very cool! (pun intended) I personally felt very good and energized after my first session, and my neck and back pain was noticeably decreased. I can't wait to see how I feel after my next session.

Had a sore neck & felt a little better after trying my first session yesterday! Owners are great & walk you through the process. Will be back again soon!

I tore my meniscus and LCL skiing earlier this year. After trying cryotherapy, I've experienced pain relief and increased mobility that lasted days after just one treatment. I'll definitely be back.

Cryo Care is remarkable. The gents are very knowledgeable, friendly, and run a high quality facility. I was blown away!

This was a really, really awesome experience! I have chronic shoulder and neck pain- & I felt immediate relief from my one session!!! Well worth it!!

& great staff!!

Very good experience! They explained the whole process to me, and it was simple and quick.
